We start this term on Saturday 21st April. This term we will be exploring ideas around sculpture and the natural world. We will be visiting the WHITECHAPEL GALLERY for MARK DION’s Theatre of the Natural World exhibition on Sat 28th April exploring a sequence of installations created between 2000 and the present. The exhibition includes The Library for the Birds of London (2018), with 22 zebra finches in an aviary, which has an apple tree at its centre, referencing the tree of life. Artist Mark Dion takes on the role of scientist, explorer, museum curator and archaeologist, he examines how knowledge is gathered, interpreted, classified and presented. His research and collections come together as elaborate installations, which combine artefacts, material culture, photographs and documents. We will also make and explore materials throughout the term, thinking about scale, form, objects and materials.
